Thandel Movie Review

An emotional drama worth watching, led by strong performances!

Films based on true stories are brought up in different forms round the nation, and Telugu cinema has its own way of approaching it, just as they have done it this time with Thandel. The film features Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles, and it brings in a true story that took place in the past.

Naga Chaitanya plays Raju, a brave fisherman who goes off from his town of Srikakulam to Gujarat for a long period of 9 months every year, working as a contract migrant worker who stays in the sea for weeks together. He is madly in love with Satya (Sai Pallavi), a clear and loving girl who only gets to speak to him once a month, when he hits the shores. However, a freak incident mid sea sends Raju and his group of 22 friends across the border to Pakistan, where they are put behind bars and termed as terrorists. The rest of the film is based on whether Raju finds his way home, and what happened to his love story.

Thandel has an interesting plot in hand based on true events that took place in the early 2000s, and it packs in the first half with interesting events, a good love track between the lead pair and beautiful songs. The film’s second half has some Pakistan portions which feel way out of the film and unnecessary, and could have been toned down. However, the climax portions offer good value and the film ends with an emotional high.

Naga Chaitanya delivers a solid performance and is getting better and better as an actor, and the film obviously benefits from Sai Pallavi’s excellent performance, as she is superb in the emotional scenes. The supporting cast also do well, with a special mention to Karunakaran (who is solid) and Aadukalam Naren.

DSP’s music is another hero of the film, his songs and BGM elevate possibly every scene in the film and make it superb.

On the whole, Thandel is a good emotional drama that could have been even better if not for the over-the-top portions in the second half. Nevertheless, an easy watch in theatres!
